Matt McDonald '79

Matt McDonald earned six varsity letters in swimming, having competed on the team since the 7th grade. Matt was an outstanding swimmer, setting school records in the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke his senior year. He was the district champion in the 100 Breaststroke in 1977 and 1979. In his senior year, Matt placed fifth in the 100 Breaststroke and seventh in the 200 IM at the state meet. His times earned him High School All-American status in 1978 and 1979. He was selected as the team’s most valuable swimmer his junior and senior years and was elected co-captain his senior year.

He continued his swimming career at East Carolina University, where he was the freshman record-holder in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, was the USS state champion in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and state champion and state record holder in the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relay. In 1996, Matt was the United States YMCA 30-34 year old champion in the 50-yard breaststroke and placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke.
