With strong support systems and a wealth of opportunities, Trinity Prep focuses on empowering every student to become the best version of themselves. Every student can discover their passions and explore them deeply during their time at the school. Sebastiaan Blickman, Assistant Head of Upper School, believes in the power of supporting faculty, staff, and students holistically in order to allow everyone in the school community to thrive.

“My role is to make sure students are held accountable, supported, and given opportunities to shine,” Blickman said. “We make sure everything is in place to help faculty and staff support students.”

Trinity Prep’s Approach to Student Empowerment

At Trinity Prep, student successes and passions are celebrated and recognized. The school has several programs where students win local, national, and international awards. However, the most important lessons aren’t learned only through competition. By becoming part of something larger than themselves, students practice leadership and problem-solving skills.

They learn the value of ethical leadership and teamwork through extracurricular programs, which they participate in alongside challenging academic courses. Between clubs, service projects, academic courses, and activities students create, they have every opportunity to discover who they are and what truly moves them.

“Whatever you can dream of, you can pursue in the upper school,” Blickman said. “If you don’t see it, you can build it. Students can do everything they want to do while pushing themselves academically.”

Signature Programs and Student-Led Projects

More than anything, staff and faculty at Trinity Prep encourage students to lead their own projects. While they provide the foundational support to get projects off the ground, students take it from there. Some examples of recent student-led programs include a student investment fund, campus diversity initiatives, UNICEF projects, and a Holocaust remembrance event, which involved bringing a cattle car exhibit to campus, and this event was particularly impactful because it overcame several logistical challenges, culminating in a powerful campus community-wide event that made a historical event tangible.

Mentorship and Peer Leadership Opportunities

One significant way Trinity Prep motivates upper school students is by showing them the power of paying it forward. They spend their time in and outside the classroom learning crucial life skills, and the next step is to help younger students thrive. The school has a big-little mentorship program that’s all about mentoring middle schoolers, as well as opportunities for senior leadership in a financial club, journalism, yearbook, and more. Clubs and organizations have intentional mentorship structures in place, allowing everyone at the school to benefit from the lessons they can learn.

Faculty and Staff: Guiding, Not Directing

The key to allowing students to take ownership of their initiatives is guided independence, whereby teachers lead by example, then step back. Teachers participate with each other when assigning projects to students, ensuring no two major projects overlap for their students. A village of faculty and staff members provides support, including advisors, deans, coaches, and counselors. With a network of support behind them, students are empowered to pursue their interests deeply, discovering what they are truly passionate about and want to continue exploring in college and beyond.

Impact on College Readiness and Future Success

Any college-bound student knows that building a resume is important, but often they become obsessed with listing as many items as possible. At Trinity Prep, students have every option to explore their interests, but they’re encouraged to hone in and focus on what they’re passionate about so they can be prepared to thrive after graduation.

“I always tell students that my goal is not that they have a CV filled with a million things,” Blickman said. “When they go to college, I want them to have established passions so they can run when they go to college, rather than stumbling around without a solid direction to go. “

Trinity Prep alumni frequently report being well-prepared for the challenges of college. Between rigorous studies and extracurricular empowerment, students graduate with the tools they need to thrive in the real world.
